2016 International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation
European Open Championships, Lisbon.

Combat Academy students, Ryan Hill and Ashley Amos were amongst over 3,500 athletes who gathered over six days at the Gymnasium Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas in Lisbon Portugal, to take part in the 2016 European Open BJJ Championships.

The number one UKBJJA ranked blue belt, Ashley Amos competed in the blue belt, adult super-heavy category, which included the current World champion Eric Bergman. Such was the quality of the category, Bergman did not even make it onto the podium.

Ash had a bye in the first round as his opponent failed to make weight.

He then put together 3 impressive wins against very tough opponents to progress to the final against Joao Paulo Martins de Araujo of São Paulo, Brazil.

The 2015 Rio Open champion, Araujo had submitted all three of his opponents en-route to the final. In a very tough final Araujo recorded a points victory leaving Ash with an extremely hard earned silver medal.

Ash was sponsored for the event by United Kingdom Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association
and Hereford based nutrition company CN Sport

Competing in the Juvenile 2 White Belt feather weight category, Faixa Rua sponsored athlete, Ryan Hill was looking to improve on the bronze medal he had won in 2015.

In the quarterfinals Ryan faced Portuguese fighter Bernado Borbinha and in a very close fight Ryan took the win by one advantage.

His semifinal against Lasse Rahkolin from Finland was an even closer affair and with no score on the board at the end of the fight, Ryan took a well deserved referee decision after being on the offensive for most of the fight.

In the final Ryan faced French fighter Quentin Codron but was unfortunately caught with an arm-bar and so ended up with a very hard earned silver medal.

As a student at Hereford Sixth Form College, Ryan receives support through the college Elite Athlete Support Programme.
