Combat Academy 2012 Annual Awards

The Combat Academy held their Annual Awards at Saxtys on Sunday 16th December 2012.

The award for The Most Promising Newcomer 2012 went to karate junior student Ben Lewis. Ben fought at The Hereford Karate Open, ECKA semi-contact nationals, and he was the only junior grade to compete at The Milton Keynes Open. Ben trains hard and has a good record of attendance.

A Merit Award was presented to Ben Oliver for his help in running the junior BJJ classes. Always ready to help the younger, less experienced members, Ben also ensures that the class is warmed-up and ready for the lessons to start.

The award for Karate Student of the Year went to Paul Lewis. Paul only started training this year, he fought in The Hereford Karate Open after about 3-4weeks training taking the gold medal. He achieved 3rd place at The ECKA National, and gold & bronze at Milton Keynes. He has a great record of attendance and always gives 100% effort.

BJJ Student of the Year was awarded to Mark Thomas. Mark has an excellent record of attendance and has competed at events throughout the country, taking medals at Spartan Grapple Challenge, The Hereford Open, The English Open and British NoGi Open.

Unable to separate the top two contenders for the award of Junior BJJ Student of the Year, it was decided that Mitch Young and Jackson Quinn would have a joint award.

Mitch trains hard and has taken silver medals at The Abu Dhabi Pro Trials, Hereford Open 12, British Open and The NJJC grappling championships, and a bronze medal at the English Open. His competitive year ended with a gold medal at The British NoGi Open.

Jackson Quinn is one of The Academy's most regular trainers. His dedication to training has been rewarded with silver medals at The Hereford Open 12, English Open and British NoGi Open. He has also taken a bronze medal at The Hereford Open 14 and the gold medal at The NJJC grappling championships.

The Overall Student of the Year for 2012 was awarded to Ryan Hill for the second year running. Ryan has the best record of attendance at the academy, and has competed in Semi Contact, Light Continuous, Freeform, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and NoGi. He always puts in the effort and is always willing to help the lower grades.

The Fighters Fighter of the Year award is voted for by the members. Following an outstanding year  Paul Lewis received the vote from his fellow students for this award to add to the award for Karate student of the year.

Following the recent loss of one of our team, it was decided that an annual award would be added to the proceedings in order to remember and honour the name of Carl Keates-Corner.

The Carl Keates-Corner Award will be presented to the student that trains and competes in the same way that Carl did. Quite simply they must train hard and fight harder.

This year the award was presented to Alexander Grikinis (Sasha). Sasha and Carl used to have some epic battles on the mat, and we could think of no one who deserves the award more.
