English Open Results
A massive congratulations to The Combat Academy team who took part in The 2011 English Open BJJ Championships (Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th November) in Dartford Kent.
Saturday saw action from the Juniors, Juveniles and Adult - Senior White Belts.
Skye McMillan stormed to the Gold Medal in the Girls under 27 kg category beating opponents from the BJJ School and Carlson Gracie teams.
Competing in the under 38kg category Kai Davies had 2 arm-bar submission wins and a convincing points win in the final to take the second gold medal for the team.
Tyler Davies defeated his first opponent by submission and then defeated a much heavier opponent to take the Gold medal and championship title in the Juvenile White Belt category.
Mitch Young competed in the under 42 kg category and following a couple of good wins he was defeated in the final and so collected the Silver Medal.
This fantastic performance from the Junior and Juvenile fighters resulted in us achieving third place in the Junior Team points and forth place in the juveniles.

In the adult category, Liam Doverman competed in the White Belt under 76 kg category. With 35 competitors this was one of the biggest categories of the event. Liam put in an outstanding performance achieving 5 wins before narrowly losing ( 0 - 2) in the final, and collecting a very hard earned Silver Medal.
Richard Davies had a tough fight in the final of the Senior under 88 kg White Belt category and was defeated on points after the fight had gone the distance.
On the Sunday the Blue - Black Belts were in action. Tom Gwilliam-Carter (Blue Belt under 82.3 kg) managed a couple of good wins before losing in the later stages of the repechage.
Emma Baker fought Christine McDonnagh in the final of the women's purple belt under 64 kg category. After some good initial exchanges, Emma was caught with an arm-bar in the final stages of the fight and so collected the Silver medal.
Emma also fought in the Purple Belt open weight category. Following another good fight with Christine McDonnagh, Emma then faced under 74 kg fighter Sarah Merriner of the Carlson Gracie Team. The weight difference proved to be too much and Emma had to settle for the Bronze medal.

The Hereford Open 2012
Get your diaries out, open your phone calendar and make a note! The Hereford Open 2012 dates have been announced.
We start on Sunday February 19th with The Hereford Open 11: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships for Adults and Seniors, all belt levels.
On Sunday March 25th The Hereford Open 12: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships will be for White Belt Adults and Seniors. There will also be Junior and Juvenile categories at this event.
These are not provisional dates, the leisure centre is booked, first aid cover has been arranged and the medals have been ordered.

Spartan Grapple Challenge
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighters Chris Konieczny and Conor Eaton-Smith on their performance at The Spartan Grapple Challenge held in Nailsea,
North Somerset (09.07.11).
Chris took Silver in the -100kg advanced division and a Bronze in the absolute, Conor took the Gold in the -93kg advanced division, and lost to Chris in the fight for the Bronze in the absolute.

Manchester Open Medals
Congratulations to The Combat Academy BJJ Team brothers Jason and Jeremy Kemp on their performance at The Manchester Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships held on Saturday 14th May 2011.
Jason defeated four opponents en-route to taking the Gold Medal in the White Belt -70 kg feather-weight category.
With no Masters fighters in the Blue Belt -70 kg category, Jeremy stepped up to the Adult division where he collected a hard earned Silver Medal.

New Purple Belt
A massive congratulations to Combat Academy coach Emma Baker on being awarded her BJJ Purple Belt. Emma has been a regular medallist at events throughout the country for several years and the promotion follows her Bronze medal at the IBJJF European Championships held in Lisbon Portugal.
Emma has already fought at her new belt level taking the gold medal in the Welsh Open over the weekend.

Strength and Conditioning Workshop for BJJ and MMA
On Saturday March 12th at 1pm at Hereford Rowing Club Ady Watts and James Dickson will be running a Strength and Conditioning Workshop specific to BJJ and MMA. It's free to attend and will be an interactive presentation covering the following:
How to perform a thorough warm up
Address flexibility issues
Increase strength, power and conditioning
Decreasing your risk of injury
How to structure your training

Ladies Only BJJ Lessons
A ladies only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class will be starting on Wednesday 2nd March (6.00-7.00). Cost is £5 per lesson and will be taken by European Bronze Medallist Emma Baker.

IBJJF European Bronze Medal
A massive congratulations to Combat Academy coach Emma Baker on her Bronze medal at the IBJJF European Championships held in Lisbon Portugal.
With a total of 18 fighters in the Blue Belt Feather-weight category Emma faced a tough challenge. Her first fight was against Spaniard Katharina Zanitze from the Gracie Barcelona Team. Emma securred victory via a 'bow and arrow' choke. In her second fight Emma defeated her opponent by a narrow points margin after the fight had gone the full six minutes. In the semi-final Emma lost to Lira Aguilar from the Brazilian Check Mat BJJ Team and so collected a hard earned Bronze medal.

Takedowns Seminar
On Sunday 6th February 2011 we will host a takedowns seminar with Craig Ewers.
Craig is the current National Coach to the Welsh Judo team, he is a Black Belt 4th Dan in Judo and a Purple Belt in BJJ.
A former two time Commonwealth Judo Champion and British Squad member Craig has also competed BJJ.
The 3 hour seminar will focus on gripping, takedowns and transition from standing to the ground.
Places will be limited and can only be reserved by full payment.
Cost £12.
