Takedowns Seminar
On Sunday 6th February 2011 we will host a takedowns seminar with Craig Ewers.
Craig is the current National Coach to the Welsh Judo team, he is a Black Belt 4th Dan in Judo and a Purple Belt in BJJ.
A former two time Commonwealth Judo Champion and British Squad member Craig has also competed BJJ.
The 3 hour seminar will focus on gripping, takedowns and transition from standing to the ground.
Places will be limited and can only be reserved by full payment.

2010 Grapple & Strike: Champion
Congratulations to Combat Academy MMA fighter, Jason Kemp on winning the 2010 Grapple & Strike Feather-weight Title.
Jason recorded 4 wins and 2 draws in the 3 qualifying rounds to secure his place in the finals held at Nantyglo Leisure Centre South Wales.
In his first fight of the finals Jason defeated Sean Scrivens of Falcons MA by judges decision after the fight had gone 3 rounds. In the final Jason faced Stephen Molyneux of the Shrewsbury based Spartan MMA team. Jason dominated the fight over the 3 rounds, forcing his opponent to defend several good submission attempts. The judges returned a unanimous decision in favour of Jason and so he received the Grapple & Strike Championship Belt.

Midlands BJJ Open
Congratulations to Combat Academy BJJ fighter, Tyler Davies on his performance at the Midlands BJJ Open held in Nottingham on Sunday 14th November 2010.
With no fighters in the juvenile category, Tyler stepped up to the adult -70 kg category, defeating his first two opponents, Tyler then lost in the final and so collected a hard earned Silver Medal.

National Ju Jutsu Council Senior British Open Championships.
Following his Gold Medal in the English Open BJJ on Saturday 6th November, Tyler Davies travelled to Worcester to compete in the National Ju Jutsu Council Senior British Open Championships on Sunday 7th November 2010:
In the juvenile -70 kg Ju Jutsu Kumite, Tyler defeated four opponents to take the Gold Medal and British Title.
He then went on to fight in the no-gi grappling and produced a further two submission wins to take the Gold Medal and a second British title.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: English Open
Congratulations to The Combat Academy BJJ Team who took part in The English Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships held at the Dartford Judo Centre in Kent on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th November 2010:
In the junior category Kai Davies (-34 kg) and Mitch Young (-42 kg) both put in excellent performances to take Silver medals in their respective categories.
In the juveniles -60 kg category Tyler Davies took the Gold medal and championship title after several good wins.
In the Masters Blue Belt -82.3 kg after a solid points win Graham Coles lost in the final by referee decision and so collected the Silver medal.
Emma Baker (Blue Belt -58.5 kg) narrowly lost in the final after nearly submitting her opponent in the dying seconds of the fight.
In the final of the Masters Purple Belt -94.3 kg category Pat Baker lost 0-3 after a very close fight.

Ju Jutsu Kumite Junior British Open Championships.
Congratulations to The Combat Academy Team who took part in The National Ju Jutsu Council British Open Championships held in Worcester on Sunday 10 October 2010:
In the boys under 40kg category Ben Oliver put in an excellent performance to retain his 2009 British Open title, adding to the Bronze medals he won in 2007 and 2008. After several tough fights Ben defeated club-mate Ryan Hill in the final.
Following a silver medal in 2007, Ryan has narrowly missed out on a British Open medal for the past two years, but put in an excellent performance to get back on the medal rostrum and collect the Silver medal.

Congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Tyler Davies on an awesome performance at the Staffordshire BJJ Open held in Stoke-on-Trent, Sunday 12 September.
Tyler had eight fights, recording seven wins - five by submission - to take two Gold and one Silver medal. Also well done to Ty Husbands for a submission win and Liam Doverman for a good performance in his first competition.

Ultimate Impact 2: All or Nothing
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Chris Konieczny on an awesome performance at Ultimate Impact 2: All or Nothing held in Gloucester on August 29th.
Chris faced an extremely tough fighter, Robert Krecicki of the Cheltenham Trojan Gym.
After three x five minute rounds, that had the crowd on its feet throughout the fight, Chris took a well deserved unanimous judges decision.
Also fighting on the show was Combat Academy fighter Jason Kemp.
Jason dominated the first round against Frank Reed, but was caught with a very tight guillotine Choke at 1:24 of Round 2.

Belts and Stripes at Braulio Estima Seminar
Combat Academy coaches Dave Coles and Simon Small have been promoted to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black and Brown Belts respectively by Black Belt World Champion Braulio Estima.
The awards took place after a seminar on Saturday 7th August 2010 at Hereford Leisure Centre.
Simon and Dave started studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 2002 and have competed with success at European, Pan-American and World level. Most recently Dave took double gold (Brown Belt) and Simon took the silver medal (Purple Belt) at the 2009 Master and Seniors World Championships held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
Dave is only the second person to be awarded a Black Belt by Braulio Estima, and is one of only thirty-two British born Black Belts. Simon is one of only seven Brown Belts awarded by Braulio In eight years of teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the UK.

Merthyr Mayhem 3
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Chris Konieczny on an awesome performance at Merthyr Mayhem 3 defeating Hill Tribes fighter Nick McFadden by unanimous decision after 3 x 4 minute rounds under pro MMA rules.
McFadden is a tough fighter with a very strong stand-up striking game. Chris employed the game-plan of closing the distance to negate McFaddens striking options, and taking the fight to the ground to employ a ground and pound strategy.
All three rounds followed the same format, to give Chris the win.

Charity Seminar
The Combat Academy's BJJ Instructor Braulio Estima's father, who lives in Palmares has been affected and has lost EVERYTHING including his home. Although devastated, he is ok. Braulio is in Brazil supporting his family.
A charity seminar in support of this will be held by Victor Estima at his new gym in Mansfield. Saturday 3rd July 1.00pm to 3.30pm. It will be a gi seminar.

Open Trials Round 1
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighters Dean Bradbury and Stephen Boore on their performance at Round 1 of the Combat Sports Open Trails. Both fighters won their two fights by submissions.

European Bronze Medal for Dean Bradbury
Huge congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Dean Bradbury on his Bronze medal in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu European Championships held in Lisbon Portugal. After three wins Dean lost in the semi-final to the current British champion Chris Regan. After a bye in the first round, Emma Baker lost her first fight on points to the eventual Gold medallist. Following a bye in the first round Lee Fishwick lost his first fight to the eventual silver medallist.

Braulio Seminar Cancelled
Unfortunately due to the current weather situation, we have had to cancel the Braulio seminar that was due to take place this Sunday. Braulio had stated that he would be willing to try and get down from Birmingham on the Sunday. However, we have seven of the attendees having to travel up from the Welsh Valleys and another five from the Forrest of Dean area. With a severe weather warning issued for Saturday night, in the interest of safety, I made the decision to cancel. We will be arranging another seminar in the near future.

The Number One BJJ competition in the UK will be held on 26 & 27 March 2010 in Birmingham.

Braulio Seminar
The Combat Academy will be hosting a BJJ seminar with multiple World Champion Braulio Estima on Sunday 10th January 2010 (1.00 - 4.00). Cost is £25 for adults and £15 for juniors. Places are limited, see Pat to reserve yours.

New Purple Belt
A huge congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Pat Baker on being awarded his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt by Braulio Estima at the Gracie Barra team seminar on Sunday 20th December 2009.
Pat has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2002 and in the summer took the Gold medal and World title at the Master and Senior Championships held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
