Simon Small, Braulio Estima Black Belt
A huge congratulations to Combat Academy coach, Simon Small who was awarded his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by Braulio Estima.
Simon has been training BJJ since 2002 and in those 11 years Simon has trained in Brazil several times, competed in the IBJJF Pan Ams (2 x Bronze), Mundials, Master and Senior (1 x Silver 1 x Bronze). He has also competed with success in many BJJ events throughout the UK.
Simon has been a Brown Belt for 3 years and competed in this years IBJJF European Championships.
Simon works tirelessly coaching at the academy and the results of our students at events throughout the UK and abroad, are a testament to his coaching.

New Black Belt in the Academy
Huge Congratulations to Ryan Hill who passed his ECKA Black belt last week. Ryan took part in the Grading under the watchful eye of Chief Instructor Sensei Dev Barrett 7th Dan at the ECKA HQ in Coventry. Ryan has been training since the beginning of 2006 when the club only trained once a week. Ryan now trains in Karate twice (sometimes even 3 times) a week and also trains in Jiu Jitsu with us. He is a very committed individual which is helped by the full support of his mum Katherine who takes him everywhere!!! Ryan shares this support with others in the club and is always very keen to come down and help out with the younger members of the academy, which is greatly appreciated. Ryan is a keen competitor, having taken many medals in Semi Contact, Light Continuous and Freeform and it is my pleasure to award him his belt, putting him on the first step of the black belt ladder.

A fantastic performance from the team at The National Ju Jutsu Council grappling competition held in Worcester (Sunday 30th June 2013). Ten fighters returned with ten medals.

Welsh Open BJJ Championships Academy Results
A huge congratulations to The Combat Academy team for their performance at The Welsh Open BJJ Championships held in Cardiff over the weekend.

Patrick Baker: Brown Belt
Huge congratulations to Patrick 'Pega Leve' Baker on receiving his BJJ Brown Belt (05.02.2013)
Pat has been training at The Combat Academy for over ten years and is only the second person to receive this award from Dave Coles.
Pat recently fought in the 2013 IBJJF European Championships, taking a bronze medal in the medium heavy category.
At purple belt Pat has also recorded the following results:

Spartan Grapple Challenge 9
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Mark Thomas on his performance at the Spartan Grapple Challenge 9 held in Nailsea, North Somerset, February 2nd 2013.
In the under 84 kg advanced division Mark Thomas collected a hard earned bronze medal. Mark also defeated his first two opponents by submission, but then had to withdraw half way through his semi-final due to a knee injury sustained in his previous fight.

No Lessons
Please note there will be no lessons Wednesday 23rd - Friday 25th January (inclusive). This is due to Dave, Simon, Emma and Pat attending The European Championships in Lisbon.
Missed lessons can be made up for at any time in the future including Saturday open mat. For those on the unlimited training, remember you are able to use the training room at any time that the gym is open and the room is not in use.

Change of Venue
We are currently in talks to secure a bigger (dryer and maybe warmer) training room on The Foley Trading Estate.
Pyramid Fitness, Dave and Simon have viewed the premises and offers have been made. We are now awaiting a decision from the management company.

Helpers Wanted
The Hereford Open 16 takes place on Sunday 17th February (9:00 - 5:00) at Hereford Leisure Centre.
We are looking for volunteers to help out time-keeping and doing the score-boards.
Please let Pat or Dave know if you are able to help out, even if it's just for an hour.

Judo Take-downs for BJJ
On Sunday 3rd February 2013 (12:00 - 3:00) we will host a takedowns seminar with Craig Ewers.
Craig is the current National Coach to the Welsh Judo team, he is a Black Belt 4th Dan in Judo and a Brown Belt in BJJ.
A former two time Commonwealth Judo Champion and British Squad member Craig has also competed BJJ.
The 3 hour seminar will focus on gripping, takedowns and transition from standing to the ground.
Places will be limited and can only be reserved by full payment.

Ladies Self Protection Course
Combat Academy coach Simon Small will be running a 3 week short course in Ladies Self Protection to be held on 3 consecutive Wednesday evenings starting 30th January 2013 6pm – 7pm at a cost of £18.
For those mums, sisters & friends that have fancied having a go, but have always been too nervous, this is your chance to join like minded ladies.
The course amongst other things, will help you build confidence, learn to escape various grabs, effectively strike without hurting yourself and gain a much stronger awareness overall.
To book you space, please complete an application form with payment as soon as possible as spaces will be limited.

Introduce a Friend Scheme
If you introduce a new member to The Combat Academy (BJJ & MMA lessons only) you will be rewarded with a cash payment.
How it Works: Once your new member signs up to the standing order scheme and pays their membership fee, you will receive a cash payment equal to their payment plan. So if they sign up for one lesson a week (£30 pcm) you will get a cash reward of £30, if they sign up for unlimited lessons (£52 pcm) you will receive a cash reward of £52.
New adults must initially attend the Friday BJJ or Thursday MMA class. New juniors must attend the Tuesday (5:00) class.
It's as simple as that, and there is no limit to the number of new members you can introduce.
The scheme will run for as long as we have space in the classes.
So get your marketing heads on, find some new members, build the club up and earn some £££'s !
