• Bring a drink in a plastic bottle.
• Make sure your finger and toe nails are cut short.
• Long hair should be tied up with non-metallic bands.
• Remove any jewellery.

Do I need to buy a special suit?
You don't need to buy a Ju-Jutsu suit (called a gi) straight away. When you are sure you like BJJ you can buy a Gi through the club.

What are the costs following the beginners course?

Please click >here for details of our training fees.

Following the beginners course you will be required to become a member of Combat Academy (the membership period is Jan-Dec).
The cost for this is £25.

Unlike nearly all other Martial Arts Clubs, there are no charges for BJJ gradings at the Combat Academy.

Can people come and watch?
Although space is limited in the training hall, you are welcome to come along and watch a session; whether you are interested in giving it a go or just want to find out more.

Who is the instructor?
Your instructor for the course will be Dave Coles, a highly experienced martial artist who holds Black Belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo.
Click >here for Dave's resume.

Can I enter competitions?
Yes, but only if you want to, and if the instructors say you are ready. Members of The Combat Academy enter events throughout the UK and abroad.

Can I get belts?
If your primary objective for starting a Martial Art is to become a Black Belt as soon as is possible, then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not for you.
To achieve the rank of Black Belt in BJJ takes on average ten years. Black Belts are not awarded to under 18's. Click >here for more information.

Does BJJ get you fit?
BJJ is an excellent form of physical activity. The beginner concentrates on getting the technique right, and during this process inevitably improves general fitness.
The components of fitness that you would expect to see an improvement in include: stamina, strength, speed, reaction-time, co-ordination and flexibility. BJJ can also help reduce stress and anxiety, and can improve your confidence.
