Open Mat 3

Report by Dave Coles

On Sunday 27th January 2002 I travelled
to Leicester with Hereford Contact Karate
Club instructor Simon Small, to take part
in the SFUK Open Mat 3.

Open Mat brings together fighters from
Submission fighting,  Wrestling, Judo,
Ju-Jutsu, Karate, Thai Boxing, and many
other fighting styles.

The session consisted of 1 hour of fighting, 2 hours of techniques, and 1 hour of fighting to finish.

The best thing about OM is there is no
attitude, you are free to do as much or as
little as you want. Fighters exchange
ideas and techniques and usually e-mail
                                           addresses after.

OM is not just for experianced fighters, I
had a grapple with a couple of relative beginners, but also had a roll with former British and Commonwealth Judo champion Wayne Lakin (an experience not to be missed), and with a couple of very good submisson fighters - who leg locked and heel hooked me to pieces - but with great control!

If you are a beginner, and are a bit
apprehensive about going to OM,
don't be. Not once did I see, or come
accross anything that was OTT.

If you're an experienced fighter; get
up there, share your knowledge, have 4 hours of training and and pick up some new techniques; all for £3:00.....
