Members of Hereford's Combat Academy travelled to Nantyglo Wales to compete in the Welsh Open grappling and submission fighting championships.

Following two convincing wins, Olly Bohn suffered a rare defeat in the semi final of the boys under 30kg category but came back in the next fight to collect the bronze medal.

Dan Hayes defeated some very tough Judo fighters en-route to a hard earned bronze medal in the boys under 60kg category

White belt Jack Wheadon-Hill narrowly lost to a purple belt in his first fight of the boys under 20kg category. In the second/third place fight off the scores were level at the end of normal time, with Jack taking the win when the fight had gone to sudden death.

Katrina Walton got off to a slow start loosing her first fight but then came back stronger to secure the silver medal in the girls under 45 category.

Caitlin Wheadon had some tough fights en-route to a bronze medal in the girls under 20kg category.

Assistant coach at the Combat Academy, Emma Baker defeated long term nemesis Sara Davies of the Falcons Martial Arts club before facing former professional cage fighter Serina Remedios of Chippenham Vale Tudo Club. Emma put in an excellent performance, narrowly loosing the referees decision after the fight had gone the distance.

Yellow belt Becky Hayes faced black belts all the way, but was not fazed as she collected a hard earned bronze medal.

Junior white belts Josh Reeves and Matthew Frost put in good performances against higher graded opposition. Competing in the mens under 80kg category, Ty Husbands made a tactical error that saw him eliminated in the first round while Chris Konieczny was eliminated by Commonwealth Games judo competitor Mark O’Connor.
