Frequently Asked Questions:
Ju-Jutsu Beginners Course
What is Ju-Jutsu Kumite?
"The most exciting development in any form of points scoring martial arts sport in decades"
(Paul Clifton, Editor Combat Magazine).
Ju-Jutsu Kumite is a relatively new sporting format which combines a whole range of skills including striking, grappling and submission fighting.
What techniques are used?
In Ju-Jutsu Kumite you can score points for kicking and punching (semi contact), throws, ground fighting and holds. Seniors can also score using arm-locks, chokes & strangles, leg-locks & ankle locks.
Typically, bouts are won by a combination of striking and grappling, including holds or submissions. Ju-Jutsu Kumite encourages the use of a balance of skills and has no bias in any specific area. Join us and find out why Ju-Jutsu Kumite is so popular.
How do I join?
Contact us and we will let you know when the next beginners course is.
Do I need to buy a suit?
You don't need to buy a ju-jutsu suit (called a gi) straight away.
If you are coming along for your first lesson, wear something loose and comfortable like old tracksuit bottoms (not jeans), and a long sleeved top. Don't wear your best Gucci gear as it may get pulled around a bit! When you are sure you like Ju-Jutsu, then you can buy a gi through the club.
How much do lessons cost?
Why do I need a licence?
Although the accident rate is far lower than many other sports, it has to be said that Ju-Jutsu Kumite is a tough combat sport. It is therefore wise to have a licence which gives insurance cover.
Can I enter competitions?
Yes, but only if you want to, and if the instructors say you are ready. The NJJKC organises competions throughout the UK and abroad. The Combat Academy also hold its' own championships.
Can I get belts?
Yes, belts are achieved through a combination of gradings and your performance in competitions.
Does Ju-Jutsu get you fit?
Ju-Jutsu is an excellent form of physical activity. The beginner concentrates on getting the technique right, and during this process inevitably improves general fitness.
The components of fitness that you would expect to see an improvement in include: stamina, strength, speed, reaction-time, co-ordination and flexibility. Contact us to discuss your personal needs.
Can I come and watch?
Unfortunately there is no room for spectators in the training room. The venue has a small cafe area where you can order tea, coffee, milkshakes and various sports drinks. For those who wish to make use the gyms training facilities whilst the juniors are training, it is possible to pay for sessions as you go.
