Formal gradings are held 2-3 times per year.
Unlike many other martial arts there is no charge for the grading, which takes place during normal lesson times.
Each grading consists of 20 elements / questions, with stripes or promotion to the next belt level being awarded as follows:
5 correct = 1 stripe on existing belt.
10 correct = 2 stripes on existing belt.
15 correct = 3 stripes on existing belt.
20 correct = Promotion to the next belt*
*The student must attend a minimum of 20 lessons between each belt level.
The areas that are assessed during the grading include a combination of the following: Jiu Jitsu skills, fitness, team-work, behaving apporpriately and following rules, gymnastic skills, learning some Portuguese words and elements from the Schools PE National Curriculum.
The gradings are intended to challenge the students, and not simply be an 'attend and pass' exercise. In previous gradings around 30-40% of the students have achieved the perfect 20/20 score to secure promotion to the next belt level, with the remaining achieving between 2-3 stripes.
We want the children to understand that rewards are the result of hard work and dedication.
